Fear of success – 3 steps to move forward

Today I want to talk to you about something very close to my heart and that is fear of success. In my last blog post I talked about negative self talk – 5 ways to start thinking positive so I thought I would spend some time on point number 5 which was all about fear. I see this is a very important subject just on it’s own and I know I’m not alone in feeling this at some points during my life.

As we go on the journey of life we are going to move through different stages, which creates different feelings of positive and negative. When we hit new comfort zones in our life we are going to hit new fears and this is resistance to change coming up. Some questions that could be running through our minds in these moments are:

What are people going to think?

What happens if they/he/she doesn’t like it?

What if people judge me because of this?

We all have busy minds so I’m sure there are plenty more thoughts going on during these moments. Negative self-talk can stop you in your tracks and then you start to question what am I doing? Sometimes we think wouldn’t it be easier to run and hide away from everything but we need to keep moving forward.

I would like to talk about my personal past fear to show you we can all move past our fears with some work. So all through my life I had a terrible fear of public speaking in front of people including people I knew. I used to start shaking, my mouth used to go dry and I used to rush the presentation really fast just so it would be over as soon as possible. During my life coach training I was taught tools to start overcoming this and it felt amazing that I was able to do a presentation without feeling massive fear. Yes I do still get nervous before a talk or presentation but I have the tools I refer back to and using this knowledge I learnt to push myself to continue to move forward.

Let’s have a look at a few sabotages us women can feel at times.

  • Not having enough faith in yourself
  • Not feeling worthy of success
  • Scared at what other’s will think of you
  • If I do this new project/meet this new guy/do this presentation what happens if it doesn’t work

So I want to dive in and let’s see the 3 things you can do to start shifting your fear today.

  • Give fear a voice

So instead of letting fear win we have to give it a voice. So let’s have a look at what you are thinking in this moment when fear enters into your mind? The best thing to do is to write down what you are feeling right now as it’s getting the thoughts out of your mind on to paper or your computer screen. You can also use eft (tapping) or meditation to calm the mind.

  • Break your fear into small pieces

Fear can look huge when we just look at the big picture of what we are attempting to achieve. So instead of looking at the big picture we need to break it down into smaller achievable goals. So what is the first step you could do to move in the right direction? What is the next step after this and so on? I know it’s so simple but when we get caught up with things we often don’t see the simple things. By breaking this down into small pieces it makes it easier to achieve the small steps to reach where you want to be.

  • Walk through the fear to the other side – You have everything already inside you to succeed already

By already taking action on the two steps above you are already well on the way to moving forward to the other side. Did you know you already have everything inside of you your goals, dreams and what you have already achieved in the past. It’s looking at what you have achieved already and using this to succeed with your next goal. You have to believe in yourself and trust you can do this.

I would love to hear from you below what are you going to do to move past your fear today?
